Family Ministries

The (United Methodist) Book of Discipline defines our belief about the family:  “We believe the family to be the basic human community through which persons are nurtured and sustained in mutual love, responsibility, respect, and fidelity.  We affirm the importance of loving parents for all children.  We also understand the family as encompassing a wider range of options than that of the two-generational unit of parents and children.”

We feel that we are called to surround our brothers and sisters in the family of Christ with a community of love and forgiveness, to pray for them, and to assist them to grow in faithfulness and service to God.

Family activities at First United Methodist Church include meals, beginning at 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday evenings through the school year.  At least quarterly, the entire church family is invited to share in Family Nights which may include games and fun or information and entertainment.   The varied age groups within the congregation are encouraged to join together in these intergenerational events and others such as the annual Ice Cream Social and Blessing of the Backpacks, Fall Festival (with Trunk ‘n’ Treat), Moravian-style Christmas Love Feast.  There are also outings to sporting events (Hickory Crawdads minor league baseball or Lenoir-Rhyne University football) and more.

Additional growing opportunities for families at First Church include marriage enrichment, parenting and child-safety and abuse-prevention courses, and other family-oriented training from time to time.
