In Our Congregation

Artisan Community

The Artisan Community at First Church is made up of men and women who are creative and who are willing to share that gift with God and their church.  Some of them are painters, others are sculptors, and others have a great design sense.  Together they create warm and inviting spaces for big events, they illustrate passages of scripture for services of worship, and they even create opportunities for displaying works of art in church and community art shows.  For more information contact the church office.

Care for our homebound members

Under the leadership of our Visitation minister, homebound members of First Church are routinely visited by our clergy, members of our church, and by our Visitation minister.  Periodically the sacrament of Holy Communion is taken to these members.  The Upper Room daily devotion book is delivered to these members by volunteers who are coordinated by the Older Adult Council.

Funerals and bereavements

Whenever a church member passes away, as part of our ministry to the family, First Church will provide a bereavement meal.  This meal is coordinated by the Bereavement Committee.  If you would like to be a part of the group that provides this vital ministry, or if you need more information, please contact the church office.

Pastoral Care

For emergencies, please call the church office during normal business hours.  That number is (828) 322-6058.  During evenings and on weekends please call this number, (828) 308-7693, and the pastor–on-call will respond.  Your pastors are all willing to assist you as they are able through life’s changes and difficult situations.  When necessary we will also make recommendations to the appropriate professional counseling services.

Care from our Craft Room

Every Tuesday morning from 9:30-11:30am this group meets in the Craft Room and serves our congregation by making and delivering seasonal gifts to our homebound members.  They knit caps for premature babies, blankets for newborn babies, and prayer shawls for members in need of prayer and hope.

Ministry Teams

One way to use your gifts and passions is by serving on one of the many Ministry Teams at First Church.  The Apostle Paul writes about the church as the body of Christ, with various members, each with unique gifts, and all necessary for the body to move.  Serving on one of the Ministry Teams at First Church is one way to put your gifts and passions to work.  Click on Ministry Teams for a complete list, including team descriptions and contact information.

Intercessory Prayer Team

It is our honor and privilege to pray with and for one another.  The Intercessory Prayer Team receives prayer requests through prayer cards submitted during worship, phone calls to the Prayer Line (828-322-4354), or by email.  If you are interested in joining this team in this important ministry, contact the church office.
