GLOBAL MISSIONS

As United Methodists we, like our founder John Wesley, firmly believe that the “world is our parish.”  When Wesley said that, he understood that mission (reaching out in service and justice and action for Christ) was the call of everyone who calls themselves Christian. We at First UMC believe that mission is a vital part of our ministry and our mission to make disciples of Jesus Christ. Someone once said that the church was not the church unless it is in mission, and we believe part of the mission of First UMC is to Make Disciples for the Transformation of the World. Therefore, we at First UMC in Hickory believe that we are called to our local community, our national community and the world. Listed below are some of the foreign missions we as a church support and are active in as a community of faith

Ministry to the Dominican Republic In April of 2019, we as a church made our way to the Dominican to build a church and work with a group known as Water Works. We also sent 200 backpacks for children in the DR to begin their school year. We will continue our trips to the DR to build homes and also assist in helping provide clean water to the DR. We work with the Iglesia Evangelica Dominicana 6H in Gaspar Hernandez Villa Magante, and have plans to continue this ministry with our brothers and sisters in the DR.

We are currently planning a mission trip to the DR ~July 29 – August 5, 2023. Contact Paul (paul@firstumchickory.org) or Jennifer (jennifer@firstumchickory.org) for more information.
